The May-Thurner Syndrome Solution

Discover why Scottsdale residents are choosing this FDA-approved treatment for MTS.

If you’ve been diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome (also called Iliac Vein Compression Syndrome or Cocketts Syndrome), you may be wondering what your treatment options are. Did you know that a medical specialty called interventional radiology offers a non-surgical, FDA-approved procedure that can successfully treat May-Thurner Syndrome?

What is Interventional Radiology?

Treating MTS with Interventional Radiology

The procedures that Advantage IR doctors use to treat May-Thurner Syndrome (MTS) are part of a medical specialty called Interventional Radiology (IR). Interventional radiologists are doctors who are specially trained to do minimally invasive vascular procedures, such as angioplasty, to treat a variety of conditions.

In the case of MTS, any existing blood clot in the left leg is treated using catheter-directed thrombolysis, where a catheter (thin tube) is used to guide special medication to the site of a blood clot to dissolve the blockage.

To prevent future clots, angioplasty and stenting is performed. During this procedure, imaging guidance is used to direct a balloon catheter, and then a stent (small mesh tube) to the left iliac vein. The balloon is inflated to open the vein, and then deflated and taken out, leaving the stent in place to keep the vein open.

Faster Recovery. Greater Comfort.

Recovery from IR treatment is much faster than invasive surgery because there is no incision to heal or stitches to be removed. The risk of bleeding and complications is lower than with invasive surgery.

Patients who undergo the combined procedures have reported a high level of satisfaction. You can usually begin normal activities again several days after each procedure. Your doctor will provide specific guidelines for your recovery. Complications are rare for those who adopt a healthy lifestyle.
