The Uterine Fibroid Embolization Advantage

Discover why Scottsdale women are choosing this FDA-approved alternative to hysterectomy for treating uterine fibroids.

If you’ve been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, you may have been told that hysterectomy is your only treatment option. However, did you know that uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a non-surgical, FDA-approved alternative to hysterectomy, has been used to successfully treat uterine fibroids for over 20 years?

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Uterine fibroid embolization (also called uterine artery embolization) is an interventional radiology treatment for uterine fibroids that preserves the uterus. UFE works by blocking the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink.

During UFE, a doctor positions a catheter through a small needle puncture in the leg and into the blood vessels of the uterus using X-ray guidance. Once positioned, tiny gelatin beads are slowly released to block the blood supply to the fibroids. Once the blood supply is successfully blocked, the fibroids will begin shrinking.

Faster Recovery. Greater Comfort.

Recovery from embolization is much faster than invasive surgery because there is no incision to heal or stitches to be removed. The risk of bleeding and complications is lower than with invasive surgery.

Most patients will have some cramping and nausea, but this tapers off over the course of several days. Most patients report that they feel recovered within seven days of having the UFE procedure.

Hysterectomy, on the other hand, takes more than 6 weeks of recovery and more than doubles the chance of complications compared to UFE.
