The Hemorrhoidal Artery Embolization Advantage

Discover why patients are choosing this alternative to transanal surgery for treating bleeding internal hemorrhoids.

If you’ve been diagnosed with internal hemorrhoids, you may have been told that dietary changes, banding, and surgery are your only treatment options. However, did you know that embolization of the hemorrhoids, a non-surgical, outpatient treatment, is being used to successfully stop the bleeding caused by internal hemorrhoids?

What is Interventional Radiology?

What is Hemorrhoidal Artery Embolization?

Hemorrhoidal artery embolization (HAE) is an interventional radiology treatment for internal hemorrhoids that offers long-lasting relief from rectal bleeding. Hemorrhoids form when abnormal connections are made between arteries and veins in the rectum. Embolization works by blocking these abnormal blood vessel connections, which eliminates the bleeding.

The procedure is performed by interventional radiologists – doctors specially trained to do minimally invasive vascular procedures, such as angioplasty and embolization, to treat a variety of conditions.

During HAE, a doctor positions a catheter through a small needle puncture in the leg and into the blood vessels that supply the rectum using x-ray guidance. Once positioned, tiny coils are slowly released that block the blood supply to the hemorrhoids and stop the bleeding.

Long-Lasting Results. Greater Comfort.

Patients usually experience immediate relief from bleeding and go home soon after the procedure is over. Recovery from embolization is fast because there is no incision to heal or stitches to be removed. The risk of bleeding and complications is lower than with invasive surgery.

Over 90% of patients who undergo embolization have reported that the bleeding from their hemorrhoids stopped. These results are usually sustained for several months from just one treatment. Side effects are mild and resolve on their own in a few days.
